LECTURE

Week 9: Stop Motion Brief
“There is an energy with stop-motion that you can’t even describe.  It’s got to do with giving things life, and I guess that’s why I wanted to get into animation originally.”

- Tim Burton. Director of The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Corpse Bride (2005) and Frankenweenie (2012).

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project: Stop Motion
Our last project is to make a stop motion about climate change.

PROPOSAL
A penguin who can't swim, builds a raft in hopes of escaping melting ice caps

STORYBOARD
Fig 1.1 Storyboard, Week 12 (16.11.2024)

Originally, the penguin would've survived the wave at the end but I changed it due to lecturer's feedback.

PROPS
Fig 1.2 Props, Week 12 (16.11.2024)

I'm proud to say that I modeled my own penguin out of clay and used an old box for props. I've got to stay in the budget. However, I think I've made a mistake of purchasing polymer clay because the stop motion is filmed on two separate days, with a week gap. The clay became hard and no longer stick. Thus, on the second day of filming, the penguin's movements are limited.

EDITING
Fig 1.3 Premier Pro Screenshot, Week 14 (29.11.2024)

The sound effects used are found online. But I did the audio dubs myself, similar to Project 1. Although they are not coherent because I tried to talk with my tongue against the roof of my mouth in order to mimic the sound of a penguin. However, it turned out that I sounded more like a seal so I increase the pitch in edit. Finally, the quote in the ending is cited from this article.

FEEDBACK

Week 12
Specific Feedback: Story not really exciting, changed the end to the penguin seemingly going to survive, but then a huge wave comes and the screen fades to black.

REFLECTION

Experience
The filming is the most frustrating part of this last project. Initially, I intended to complete filming within four hours but some parts of the footage feels "laggy" so I had to reshoot again and again.

Observation
Despite my efforts, some footage still appears to be "laggy".

Findings
I realised, like Project 2, my voice doesn't sound enthusiastic, especially when I shout "Woohoo!". Also, towards the end of the film, the penguin is really quiet for someone to be suddenly swept by the waves. Perhaps I should've add some screaming.
