FINAL PROJECT
Before the Trip
During the first few weeks, we came up with a concept of combining gachapon mechanism with Japanese luck & fortune. I was assigned to create maneki-neko prizes which would come out of the gachapon machine.

I came across an article during our research proposal with an image of a maneki-neko figurine tied to an omikuji, which I thought is very interesting. To start, I traced the outline of a faceless maneki-neko to act as a base.

Fig 1.2 Figurine Design Progress

From the left, I've created three figurines and showed them to my group members. They liked it and requested me to create more. I've created eight in total, all symbolic in their colours, paw raised and item. For example, the black neko protects one from threats so it's holding a katana with both its paws raised for double protection.

Next, we have to sketch a gachapon machine design. I sketched one with its left paw raised to attract people. I thought of letting its paw becoming the handle to be pulled down.

Slowly, as our ideas exchange back and forth, we combined our sketches together. Our final concept is to create a website that has a maneki-neko machine that dispenses gachapons with omikujis inside.

After the Trip
After experiencing the joy and intensity of gachapon ourselves, one machine we found to be most interesting is found in Kuro Sushi Restaurant. Instead of coins, it requires five plates to activate it.

Another difference between this machine and the rest we've encountered - is that it doesn't have a front cover. We can see directly there's capsules inside but we didn't know the possibility of its content. This stretches our imagination and excitement tenfold. What are we going to get? What could possibly fit in there?

  (Spoilers: It's a rubber keyring)

Therefore, we made a decision that the maneki-neko should be transparent, either in the head or belly. I was then put in charge of the website background.

The requirements my group leader gave me was that I need to include the traditional Japanese red gate and Mount Fuji.

Fig 1.6 Background Progress

I've been working on the background up until the third panel where my group mates took over. During then, I was reassigned to animate gachapon openings of the prizes we've designed. I was given the pleasure to pick seven, one from each theme, and the honour of giving them names and description.

Finalizing

On the eighth week, we presented our website to our lecturers. They said our website should have a landing page instead of jumping straight into the game. With that feedback, I was assigned to pick colour codes for our website landing page.

Fig 1.7 Colour Schemes

I experimented with a few combinations from existing colours such as our website background and maneki-neko. I tried my best to complement the colours and g them a certain theme. I then uploaded them to our programmer.

Due to time constriction, our programmer had to revise my colour schemes. I understand the rush and effort so there's no hard feelings.

On the third day of the third month, our programmer announced that our website is complete!

REFLECTION
With some of my group members as seniors, I found myself lacking in experience and knowledge. I was worried that I may have no role in this group project but my work journey has proven me wrong.

I liked working together with my group members and had a wonderful experience before, during and after our trip to Tokyo. I look up to the my seniors and tried my best to not let them down.

The part I dislike is the amount of times my After Effects "not responding" and my files failing to be shared amongst my group members. I was frustrated because I don't know what I did wrong and my group members had to step in by meeting face to face on campus.

Overall, I'm proud to play a role in this group instead of freeloading (even though I've screwed up the assets and misinterpret messages a couple times). To my group members - We did it.
