Project 2: Sense of Place

Research
As a class task, we were instructed to take three fresh pictures that reminded us of a particular location.
Fig 1.1 Three fresh pictures, Week 9 (24.10.2022)

Location: Al Jahili Fort in Abu Dhabi, UAE

My family and I went to Al Jahili Fort during our time in the UAE. I remember sliding down a sand hill on a wooden board as an activity there. I also studied in Abu Dhabi for a few years.
  1. Luggage bag - I travelled from Malaysia to UAE and back with it
  2. Student ID - A memento of my time studying in Abu Dhabi
  3. 50 Dirham - Features Al Jahili Fort, where my family and I been there once
Design Development
I found an artwork online by Shamsia Hassini, a French artist who draws on money.

While I don't want to actually draw on money, I thought it would be nice to reconstruct the layout of the 50 Dirham using digital collage with me in it.

Creating Artwork
To compose my collage, I'll be using Adobe Photoshop where I've learned to crop and mask selections.
Fig 1.4 Sense of Place Progress #1, Week 10 (1.11.2022)
  1. I take a picture of myself with my luggage bag.
  2. I google a picture of Al Jahili Fort and used most of its elements for my collage.
  3. I compose them all together using the rule of thirds.
My progress came to a halt when I couldn't decide whether to go for a night or day setting. Personally, I like the night setting because that's the time I arrived there; however, I fear that it may be difficult to see the fort in the darkness.

Miss Noranis recommends the night setting as it's more fitting to the vibe, and also colouring the sand hill.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I find it challenging to do the class task because there isn't many relatable items in my room. Plus, there's a time limit to produce at least three fresh pictures. When the time's up, I was nervous that my photos may not be accepted. Fortunately, they're accepted and I was able to proceed with the design development.

Observation
I noticed I had trouble deciding the next step for my artwork. If it weren't for my lecturer, it would be difficult for me to choose between the night and day setting.

Findings
Since I have trouble deciding, perhaps I could ask one or two of my classmates for their opinion on my artwork, instead of waiting for the weekly feedback session to avoid delay in submission.
