LECTURE

Week 5: Typo Task 2 Demo

In this lecture, we were shown the steps required to complete this task. It gives us an insight on what should our final product be.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Typographic Exploration and Communication
Week 5 - Week 8

Firstly, there are three editorial text options to chose from. I focused on their headlines:
  1. The impact of Bauhaus on modern culture
  2. Follow the Code
  3. Visualise for A Better World
Phase 1: Sketches
I've made a few sketches prior to today's class. We were instructed to share them amongst ourselves for feedback.

Top left: I replaced the dots of "i" with circle shapes for eyes.
Bottom Left: I boxed and expanded "VISUALIZE" to make it more visible to the eye.
Top & Bottom Right: I surrounded "VISUALIZE" with an eye shape.

Phase 2: Digitalization
Fig 1.3 Title Designs, Week 6 (9.10.2022)

As I was designing the eye shape in Illustrator, another idea came up my mind to bold and expand "L" to create like a nose for a face.

I tried my best to align the title with the body text. Unsure of which title I should go for, I showed my progress to Sylvia. She said she prefers the one with the eye shape because the title is simple and more smoother to read.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
Specific Feedback: Most of my classmates said that it is difficult to judge my sketches because there's only clear exploration on the title, not the body text. Though, they liked the concept of "VISUALIZE" surrounded with an eye shape
General Feedback: None

Week 7
Specific Feedback: None
General Feedback: Never use more than two different typefaces

Week 8
Specific Feedback: Headline exp is rudimentary in nature, crafting can be better. Body text is acceptably formatted but also has much room for improvement in kerning/tracking and line-length. Competency level: Beginning-Developing.
General Feedback: None

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I'm jealous of my classmates' skills and abilities. Some of them have already done their digitalization in the first week of this task. I felt embarrassed when they looked at my sketches with raised eyebrows.

Observations
I don't have much experience in InDesign, let alone in Illustrator. If one compares my title to my classmates', mine looks weak, and dare I say, uninteresting. Maybe I should've asked my classmates - those who are already in the digitalization phase, how they created their title during the feedback session.

Findings
Throughout this task, I've realized that I put my attention too heavily on the title. I didn't experiment much on the layout of the body text. I didn't do research outside of my lecturer's resources. I believe by reading magazine articles will expose myself to creative and effective layouts.

Week 7

Fig 1.9 Computer Typography Basics by David Creamer

This week's book teaches me the importance of readability. Ever since technology is taking over, it is important for a designer to know how different fonts work on the computer.

A designer's work is not done after editing. The types of fonts may affect the word spacing and readability of a body text. Hence, there is Tracking.

Fig 2.1 Tracking

Importance of Tracking
  • Improve readability
  • Fit a required space without altering the type size or line spacing
  • Fix orphans
